What the English level test covers
Four skill areas, so your level is not guessed from grammar alone.
Grammar
Tenses, conditionals, the passive, reported speech and advanced structures, from the basics up to C1.
Vocabulary
Everyday words, common collocations and phrasal verbs, and working out meaning from context.
Reading
Short texts and longer passages, from finding facts to understanding what the writer thinks.
Listening
Real recordings and short dictations, so your listening is tested rather than assumed.
What you get when you finish
Your CEFR level
An estimated level from A1 to C2, worked out from your score.
Your score
Your overall score and a breakdown by skill.
Strengths and focus areas
Written comments on what you handled well and what is worth extra practice.
Every question reviewed

What the CEFR levels mean
CEFR is the standard scale that schools, universities and employers use to describe language ability. This test reports your level as one of six bands.
| Level | In plain words | Score on this test |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner: you understand and use very simple phrases. | Under 25% |
| A2 | Elementary: you manage simple, everyday situations. | 25% or more |
| B1 | Intermediate: you handle most travel situations and can describe experiences and opinions. | 45% or more |
| B2 | Upper intermediate: you follow complex texts and speak with reasonable fluency, enough for work or study. | 60% or more |
| C1 | Advanced: you use English flexibly for work and study and follow demanding texts. | 75% or more |
| C2 | Proficient: you understand almost everything and express yourself precisely. | 90% or more |
These score bands are our estimate, not an official scale.
Before you start
- Set aside up to 80 minutes in a quiet place. You only get one attempt.
- Use headphones or check your speakers: the listening section plays recordings.
- Stay on the test page. Closing or leaving it ends your attempt.
- Work alone, without a dictionary or translator, so your result is honest.
- Take it when you are rested. If you are unsure, choose the answer that seems most likely.
How accurate is this test?
It is a good first estimate of your grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening, and everyone is scored the same way. It is not an official certificate.
A multiple-choice test cannot measure speaking or writing, so your level in those skills may be higher or lower than your result. A teacher can check them in a free trial lesson.
If a university, employer or visa office asks for proof of English, you will need an official exam such as IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge.

English level test questions
Is the English level test really free?
Yes. Create a free account and take the test at no cost. We do not ask for a card, and you do not need to buy a package to see your result.
How long does the test take?
It has 50 questions and you have up to 80 minutes. Plan for a quiet, uninterrupted sitting.
What does the test measure?
Grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening. It does not measure speaking or writing.
How accurate is the result?
It is an estimate. Everyone is scored in the same way, and the result is a useful starting point for choosing lessons or study materials, but it is not an official qualification. You will get the most useful result if you take it rested and without help.
Can I take the test more than once?
No. Each account can take the test once, so choose a calm moment. If you want your level checked again later, a teacher can do that in lessons.
What happens if I leave the page?
Closing or leaving the test page ends your attempt, and you cannot restart it. Keep the page open until you finish.
Do I need headphones?
The listening section plays recordings, so use headphones or working speakers and check your sound before you begin.
Is this an official English certificate?
No. It gives you an estimated CEFR level, not a certificate. For a university, job or visa application, use an official exam such as IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge.
