YDS, YÖKDİL or e-YDS: Which Exam You Should Actually Sit

The difference between YDS, YÖKDİL and e-YDS has almost nothing to do with difficulty. It is about what each score is allowed to be used for, and about which sessions are still left this year.

Start with the only question that matters

Not "which is easiest". What do you need the score for?

That bottom half is the whole decision for a lot of people.

If you are purely academic - a master's, a doctorate, an academic post - all three work, and you can pick on convenience. If your reason is a public-sector allowance or a KPSS language score, the decision is already made for you.

What is actually different

Scoring is identical across all three: correct answers × 1.25, and wrong answers cost nothing.

The e-YDS trade is simple. You pay roughly 950 TL more and you have to reach one of four cities, and in exchange you get your result the same evening instead of three weeks later. If a deadline is close, that is worth every lira. If it is not, it is 950 TL for nothing.

The calendar has already decided part of this

It is late August, and one option is gone.

2. e-YDS26 September
3. YDS/222 November, apply 30 Sep to 8 Oct
4. e-YDS19 December

YÖKDİL/2 was on 9 August. The next YÖKDİL is not until spring 2027. So if you need a score before the end of this year, YÖKDİL is not on the table at all, whatever its other merits.

That leaves two real routes: the November YDS, or one of the two remaining e-YDS sessions.

Is YÖKDİL easier?

It has that reputation, and the reason is real but narrower than people think.

YÖKDİL is split into Health, Science and Social Sciences, so the vocabulary and the passages come from your own field. If you are a medical researcher reading medical passages, you are not fighting unfamiliar terminology on top of the English. That genuinely helps.

But the question types, the timing and the scoring are the same, and the reading load is the same. YÖKDİL is not a shorter or gentler exam. It is the same exam with subject matter you already know.

Familiar vocabulary is worth a few points, not a grade. If your English is not at the level, YÖKDİL will not rescue you - and if a language allowance is your goal, those few points are worth nothing at all, because the score cannot be used for it.

So which one

2. Then check your own institution's wording

One last step, and skip it at your peril: read your institution's own requirement before you book anything. Faculties add conditions of their own, and a score that satisfies the national rule can still fail a departmental one. Five minutes of reading now is cheaper than 1,200 TL and three months.

Scores are generally valid for five years, with one useful exception: for academic post applications, YDS and YÖKDİL scores do not expire at all. Validity is treated differently depending on what you are applying for, so confirm the period for your specific purpose rather than assuming.
