YDS 2026: The Deadline, the Scoring Rule and a 13-Week Plan

YDS/2 is on 22 November and applications close on 8 October. The scoring rule that should change how you sit it, where the 80 questions come from, and a 13-week plan.

The most expensive mistake on the YDS is not a wrong answer. It is a blank one. Wrong answers cost nothing at all, and every November thousands of candidates still hand in papers with empty boxes on them.
That is the first thing worth knowing about this exam. The second is the calendar, which is tighter than most people realize.
Two dates, and the exam is not the urgent one
YDS/2 falls on 22 November 2026. But the date that decides whether you sit it at all comes much sooner: applications open on 30 September and close on 8 October.

The fee is 1,200 TL, paid through ÖSYM's AİS system or the AİS mobile app. Miss 8 October and you pay the late tariff. Miss 14 October and you wait for the spring session.
From now to exam day is about thirteen weeks. That is enough, provided you spend them on the right things - and the scoring rules decide what those are.
The rule that should change how you sit the paper
YDS scoring is arithmetic, not judgement:
Correct answers × 1.25 = your score. Eighty correct is 100.
Wrong answers subtract nothing. No penalty, no negative marking, no quarter-point deductions.
An empty box and a wrong answer score exactly the same. One of them has a one-in-five chance of being right. Leaving anything blank is the only guaranteed way to lose a point you might have had.
The paper became a reading exam while nobody was watching
Here is where the 80 questions come from:
Now add three of those together. Reading passages (20), cloze (10) and paragraph completion (4) come to 34 questions - 42% of the paper, and 42.5 points. Every one of them is a paragraph you have to read under time pressure.
Vocabulary and grammar, the two things most candidates spend their preparation on, are 16 questions between them. Twenty points.
This is why people who "know a lot of English" still score 60. The exam does not ask what you know. It asks how fast you can read.
What score do you actually need

Scores are valid for five years. The exception is worth knowing: for applications to academic posts, YDS scores do not expire at all.
Check the exact requirement with your own institution before you set a target. Departments add their own conditions, and a score that satisfies YÖK may not satisfy your faculty.
Thirteen weeks, spent in the right order

Weeks 1 to 4. Build the base. Academic vocabulary and the grammar that actually appears: tenses, conjunctions, prepositions, phrasal verbs. This is the only phase where memorisation pays, so get it done early and stop.
Weeks 5 to 8. Learn to read fast. The largest block of the exam deserves the largest block of your time. Work on finding the answer without reading every word - question first, then the paragraph. Speed here is worth more than vocabulary anywhere else.
Weeks 9 to 11. Drill by question type. Past papers, but sorted by type rather than sat end to end. Do thirty cloze tests in a row and the pattern becomes visible. Do them scattered through mixed papers and it never does.
Weeks 12 to 13. Sit the real thing. Two or three complete papers, 180 minutes, no pauses. You are training concentration as much as English, and three hours is longer than it sounds.
If the deadline has already passed
You are not stuck until spring. e-YDS runs throughout the year at ÖSYM electronic exam centers in Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir and Adana. Same format, same scoring, same official validity - and results the same day.
It is the better option if you need a score for a deadline you cannot move. The paper sessions are simply cheaper and more widely available.
Where preparation usually goes wrong
Most YDS preparation fails in a predictable way: the candidate does what feels productive rather than what moves the score. Memorizing a thousand more words feels like progress. It is 6 questions.
Reading four paragraphs faster is 20.
