Cambridge English has confirmed the last paper-based sitting of A2 Key: Thursday 3 December 2026. After that date, the paper version of this exam is withdrawn. If you or your child are preparing for A2 Key on paper, here is exactly what changes, what doesn't, and which exam to book instead.
What's actually ending
Only the standard paper-based A2 Key exam is being withdrawn. Cambridge's own 2026 examination calendar states it directly: "Paper-based A2 Key is being withdrawn after 3 December. A2 Key Digital remains available; contact your exam centre for their schedule."
The three remaining 2026 paper sessions are Saturday 9 May, Saturday 13 June, and Thursday 3 December. The last of these is final.
Why Cambridge is withdrawing it
The stated reason is demand, not quality or security. Candidates are reaching A2 level at a younger age, so most of them now sit A2 Key for Schools instead of standard A2 Key, and more candidates overall are choosing the digital format. Entry numbers for paper-based standard A2 Key have fallen enough that Cambridge no longer runs it past 2026.
What to book instead
Two options remain, and the right one depends on the candidate's age, not on which gives a "better" certificate - both carry identical recognition.
- A2 Key (paper)Last sitting 3 Dec 2026
- Adult or general candidateBook A2 Key Digital
- School-age candidateBook A2 Key for Schools
- Same certificateNo difference in recognition
- A2 Key Digital - the same exam, same content, same certificate, taken on computer. Faster results, more available dates, no change to what is tested.
- A2 Key for Schools - content aimed at younger learners, available in both paper and digital, with no withdrawal announced. The certificate does not say "for Schools" on it and carries the same recognition as standard A2 Key.

What this means for your plan
If you already booked one of the three remaining 2026 paper sessions, nothing changes - sit the exam as planned. If you were planning to book A2 Key on paper for 2027 or later, that option will not exist; book A2 Key Digital or A2 Key for Schools instead, and confirm with your specific exam centre which formats and dates they offer, since not every centre runs every option on the same schedule.
